Take It: EEEasy

The three basics “E’s” for English coaching that have been working for me are:

Evaluation: This means taking as much time necessary to evaluate your student’s skills, ability, and needs. People are complex, I have made many mistakes in prematurely ascertaining their ability level and starting down the wrong road.

Specifically rating: Reading, Writing, Comprehension, Speech, and Desire To Learn.

Engagement: Finding an area of study or custom designing a program that will be engaging for your student based on the evaluation. This means taking notes when your student is animated, excited, or really engaged. Do that again! This also means not pushing too hard, taking time to play, go for a walk, or get to know each other.

Empowerment: A focus on facilating your student to interact with the community, and being careful not to do for them, what they can do for themselves. This also means developing a long term vision for how our system can best serve them, their families, their culture, and even their country of origin, as they naturalize.
