30 Days of Prayer for Burma
Day 5: A Face Of Hope

The first election in Burma in 30 years was held in 1990. Aung San Suu
Kyi won over 60% of the vote and over 80% of parliamentary seats. The
ruling junta quickly overturned the results and placed her under house
arrest. She has remained under house arrest for more than 18 of the past
20 years. She was to be released in May of this year, but an American
swam across the lake to her house uninvited, resulting in an additional
18 months of house arrest. In 1991, she was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize for her devotion to her country, despite her persecution. She even
refused to attend her husband’s funeral in England, knowing it would
mean permanent exile.
Her father, Aung San, was assassinated when she was two, but she
learned from him that leadership was a duty, and that one can only lead
in humility. During her election campaign, when faced with soldiers lined
up to fire on her if she continued to walk down the street, she continued
to walk.
Pray for Aung San Suu Kyi:
- For her safety and protection.
- For her freedom and ability
to serve as the duly-elected
leader of Burma. - For her faith.
