30 Days of Prayer for Burma
Day 4: The Government
Burma is governed by a brutal military junta, headed by Senior
General Than Shwe, along with Prime Minister General Thein Sein.
For 62 years Burma was under British control. In 1948 it became
an independent republic, until democratic rule ended in 1962 with
a military coup. During that time almost all aspects of society were
brought under government control. From 1964 until 1988 the Burma
Socialist Programme Party was the sole political party; during this time
Burma became one of the world’s poorest countries.
Almost immediately protests began against the government, and they
were always violently suppressed by the rulers. As early as 1962
government persecution forced 300,000 to flee the country. In 1990
the government held free elections and Aung San Suu Kyi won, but the
military regime annulled the elections and refused to step down. The
government is among the worst in the world for human rights abuses.
Pray for:
- Conviction in the heart among
military leaders, leading to
compassion.
- A peaceful transition to
democracy.
- For leaders who will
govern justly to be placed positions of authority
“The hope is in the child that was born,
the son that was given. The government
will be on his shoulders. He will be
called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty
God, Everlasting Father, Prince
of Peace. Of the increase of his
government and peace there will be
no end.” (Taken from Isaiah 9:6-7)
