What can you do to help? While it varies by state, in my state around 200 Karen refuges a year come in, these folks have about 8-12 months of federal and state support, and they are then left to fend for themselves (to some degree). They need help learning conversational English and coaching on basic life skills. Just an indigenous friend to show them the ropes and teach them how to get by. Otherwise they become isolated, fossilize, and end up trapped in the US and in poverty. An hour or two a week of your time.
