Journal notes:

Last week I was tired and feeling poorly. Walking into church I was loathing my commitment to volunteer coaching English. So I sent up a simple prayer for “strength”.

As it turned out I had a blast. It was challenging, interesting, and fun. My two new students  Bureh and Than Htway were wonderful. Bureh is young and has really good English skills. While Than Htway is older and has almost none. Both are very kind and patient men, with wonderful smiles, who I enjoyed getting to know.

To my surprise they both love coffee! Who knew?

My goal was to leave them with 5 new English words, and I would learn five Karen. The problem with that plan is that Bureh is Karenni and Than Htway is Karen, and they speak to each other in Burmese.

So I had to learn 3 to 1. Unfair.

Example: Hand is “daku” in Karenni, “Lay” in Burmese, and “Chew” in Karen.
